How Does That Work? (The Oscars, 2013)

So the Academy Awards® have come and gone again, and although I didn’t get to watch them, I was left a little puzzled by some of the nominations and winners.

I rarely get out to watch films at the theatre– I haven’t been in over a year, so I haven’t seen any of the nominated movies. But I did find it strange that Argo could win best picture yet its director, Ben Affleck, didn’t even get a nomination.

Apparently it directed itself.

Or maybe Chris Terrio’s script– good enough to win an Oscar®– was so good, that any old schmuck could’ve done it.

Which brings me to my main question: How do they judge the Best Screenplay categories?

Do they base it off the finished movie? (Which could be quite different from the script. Directorial changes, improvisation, editing could all depart from the screenwriter’s vision)

Or do they judge it off the merits of the script?

Of course, I’m better served spending brain cycles working on my script rather than thinking about these questions, so with that in mind, it’s time to head off.

Enjoy.
