The third logline in my 50 Loglines in 50 Weeks series is a thriller called LIMINAL.
A photojournalist’s world unravels when photographs from his dreams begin manifesting in reality, pulling him toward a life that shouldn’t exist — and a presence within it that grows stronger every time he sleeps.
I had the idea about six years ago but it remained a single sentence in my ‘film ideas’ OneNote.
I took a while to settle on photojournalist. I started out very basic — a man. Then I thought about what sort of man needed to go on this journey, and I hesitated between restless and unsettled. Then I thought it was better (more specific and better characterisation) if I referred to him by his job title rather than as ‘adjective man’. I settled on photojournalist and stripped back the adjective.
My intention is that, underneath the thriller externals, it’s actually about the protagonist’s response to the call of God.
There’s meant to be a menacing/unsettling vibe because the call to open one’s eyes to the spiritual is not necessarily gentle or desired. It’s often an intrusion. And it’s especially unsettling if we don’t know the character of the One doing the calling.
