I finished John Truby’s Anatomy of Story yesterday. It is quite a different read than Save the Cat! but still a very informative and valuable read. It doesn’t have the same conversational style or Blake’s humour, but it does offer a very indepth look at story and goes into some of the nuts-and-bolts of story construction that Blake only alludes to in his books.
I love Blake’s approach to creating a story, but I will definitely be incorporating some of Truby’s wisdom into my own stories, particularly the character and symbol webs. I would definitely recommend Anatomy of Story be read by anyone intent on writing for film or TV. I will post further on the my thoughts about Anatomy of Story, but I will read my other new tome, The Moral Premise, first and then combine the different ideas into a unified approach to structuring stories for the silver screen.
Also coming soon is my beat sheet for Inception. It is a mind-blowingly cool movie and hits all the beats – Christopher Nolan, Blake would be so proud of you!!!
